Language Diversity

I recently came across an article during UX research and wanted to bring it up and hear your opinion. It’s about language diversity on the web.

English speakers make up around a quarter of the world while there are at least 1 billion Chinese speakers in the world. More than 50% of the web is in English (62% as of June 2021) while only 2% of the web is in Chinese. 🤔 seems kind of odd, no?

There was one Quote that Heather said in the article When the Internet doesn’t speak your language,

“Why should people need to learn English before they learn how to use the Internet?”

Heather has a good point but I think she’s asking the wrong question. This statement is basically saying,

“Why should I go into a foreign country and learn their language?”

The most simple reason I can think of why most of the web is in English is that the people who make their content choose to make it in English.

Instead, I believe we should ask ourselves,

How can we design our web content or write our literature so that it’s easier for non-English speakers to use, understand and read?
